The efficient design of appliances and furniture is important to accomplish tasks that are essential in daily living. Sir James Dyson, an industrial designer based in Wiltshire, England, has entered the field in early 2009 with a series of patented designs for a more efficient kitchen.
This is a welcome development from Dyson, who is best known for his invention of the Dual Cyclone line of vacuum cleaner which uses the cyclonic separation process. Unlike conventional vacuum cleaners, the Dyson’s invention does not have a bag to gather the dust and debris collected during use. Dyson found that the design of conventional vacuum cleaners is prone to clogging, thus reducing the efficiency of the unit. He then designed a vacuum cleaner which uses a cyclonic separation, a process used in saw mills and other industrial places to clear dust. This process can also allow the cleaner to work without the bag. This type of vacuum cleaner gained wide popularity in the 1990s, particularly in Japan.
With the popularity of his vacuum cleaners, James Dyson founded Dyson Ltd (dyson.co.uk). Along with the line of vacuum cleaners, the company expanded to manufacture other appliances designed by Dyson. This includes the ContraRotator washing machine which has two drums rotating in opposite directions. First made available in November 2000, this appliance did not get the same popularity as the vacuum cleaners and is discontinued from the market.
Also discontinued in the market is the Dyson Ballbarrow, which is spherical-shaped wheelbarrow. The Ballbarrow uses a heavy-duty plastic ball rather than a metal wheel so that steering would be easier and also preventing the wheelbarrow from sinking in soft ground.
The company launched the Dyson Airblade hand dryer in 2006. Reputed to work fast, the hand dryer can produce a stream of air which acts like a sort of invisible windscreen wiper to dry hands. The unit can also filter out bacteria and mould from the air using Dyson’s patented filter.
In October 2009, the company started to market the Dyson Multiplier fan for desktops or windows. Using technology from the Dyson Airblade hand dryer, the Multiplier is designed to work more efficiently than conventional fans and allows the circulation of more air.

An internet search will reveal several websites for replacement parts for Dyson products, most of which are for their line of vacuum cleaners. Replacement parts for the company’s other products are very difficult to find but be sure to check the company’s website first.
Products from Dyson are at the high-end of the market. But for consumers looking for innovative redesign of mundane appliance, Dyson appliances is a good place to start looking.
